London Journal Inaugural Lecture: London at War and Peace: Crisis and Reckoning, 1702-1951

Speaker: Professor Jerry White (Birkbeck, University of London)

Jerry White explores the impact of war and its aftermath on London and the Londoner. Ranging widely over nearly three centuries of metropolitan history, White detects patterns of wartime repression and peacetime rebellion, of urban development stemmed then unleashed, of contradictory consequences for the London economy, of gains and losses for the metropolitan poor and of the terrors and limitations of a xenophobic metropolis. While all of London’s wars were historically contingent, the experience and consequences of war and its legacy would repay special study by the capital’s historians.

The event is free to attend, but you must register in advance at http://www.londonjournallecture.eventbrite.co.uk
