Clarendon Lectures

The Clarendon Lecture series is run across the University of Oxford. The next series will be given by Professor Thomas Keymer, Chancellor Jackman Professor of English at the University of Toronto.

The theme of the 2014 series is ‘Poetics of the Pillory: English Literature and Seditious Libel, 1660-1820’

Individual lectures are entitled:

1. Faint Meaning: Dryden and Restoration Censorship.

2. Libels in Hieroglyphicks: Defoe, Pope

3. The Trade of Libelling: Fielding, Johnson

4. Southey’s New Star Chamber

The 2014 series will take place on weeks 5 and 6 of Michaelmas Term: Tuesday 11 November, Thursday 13 November, Tuesday 18 November and Thursday 20 November. All four lectures will take place in Lecture Theatre 2 in the English Faculty, commencing 5.15pm.
