A one-day symposium, supported by the Art Fund

Christiana Herringham was a significant figure in the British art world at the turn of twentieth century. In addition to being an artist, she co-founded the Art Fund, wrote articles for the newly established The Burlington Magazine, headed up the tempera revival and championed Indian art, and campaigned for women’s suffrage. Her professional and personal circle was as wide as her many interests, and included Annie Swynnerton, Roger Fry, William Rothenstein and Millicent Fawcett.
Royal Holloway, University of London is currently holding an exhibition entitled, ‘Christiana Herringham: Artist, Collector, Campaigner’ (14 January – 1 April 2019), celebrating her life and work. To coincide with the exhibition, they are holding a one-day symposium focusing on Herringham and her circle. This symposium will highlight the wide-range of research that has been recently undertaken on the subject. It will bring together the many different aspects of her work and, in doing so, will enable a more rounded understanding of both Herringham and her networks.
Speakers will include Dr Zoe Thomas (University of Birmingham), on Herringham and the Women’s Guild of Arts; Dr Meaghan Clarke (University of Sussex), on Herringham and other women art writers of the fin de siècle; and Dr Sarah Victoria Turner (Paul Mellon Centre), on Herringham and Anglo-Indian cultural connections at the beginning of the twentieth century.
