2017 Annual Conference of CILIP Library & Information History Group: The information landscape in Scotland: 1600-1900

CILIP’s Library and Information HIstory Group is delighted to announce that its annual conference will be held at the University of Dundee on Saturday 1 July 2017.

Visits on Friday 30 June

Conference delegates are invited to book the following tours on Friday afternoon:

2:00pm:  Behind-the-scenes: Dundee Heritage Trust (Free)Curator Louisa Attaheri will lead a behind-the-scenes tour of the Dundee Heritage Trust’s collection stores. This will give insight into the acquisition, care and exhibition of the collections, which encompass Discovery Point’s polar collections and Verdant Work’s jute material, both recognised by the Scottish Government as Collections of National Significance. There will be chance to find out more about the collection and have a closer look at some its most important archives.Numbers are limited.

3:30pm Tour of Archive Services at University of Dundee (Free)A behind-the-scenes tour of Archive Services, part of Culture & Information at the University of Dundee. The tour includes an overview of the archive collections, which range from papyrus to digital files, a visit to the rare book collection and a chance to see some of the 150,000 photographs held by the Archives.Numbers are limited.

6:00pm A Walk with Words: Dundee’s Literary Streets (£10 per person)Join PhD researcher and storyteller Erin Farley on a walking tour to discover how reading, writing and printing have shaped the history of Dundee through the libraries, collections, and literary societies hidden among its streets. Hear tales of the remarkable publishing history of the city, from broadsides to the Beano. Follow the stories of newspaper rivalries, struggling poets and ground-breaking novelists as the tour uncovers some of the characters who have been at the centre of events from the 18th century to the present day.

We will meet at 6pm at the Victoria Road entrance to Dundee Central Library (following an optional viewing of archive collections there). The walk will end at approximately 7.30pm at the University of Dundee on Perth Road. Please wear comfortable footwear and weather-appropriate clothing.

This event has been arranged to coincide with CILIP Library and Information History Group’s 2017 conference, but is open to all. Numbers are limited
