Festival of History, 2027

Convened by the Royal Historical Society and  Institute of Historical Research

Today we launch a new nations-wide Festival of History, convened by the Institute of Historical Research and the Royal Historical Society. The Festival will run between 5-16 July 2027.

The Festival celebrates the joy of making history and advocates for its importance, locally, nationally and globally. At its centre are the thousands of historians — UK-wide, within and beyond education — who pursue and deepen our understanding of the past. The Festival will take place wherever history is created, enjoyed and valued.

You can read more about the Festival and how to get involved here.

From today we invite applications to take part in the Festival next July. We’ve now opened the call to apply for our ‘Affiliated Event’ and ‘Funded Event’ strands.

The closing date for applications is 6 January 2027.

What’s distinctive about this Festival is its focus on the ‘How of History’: the practice of research and historians’ craft in recovering and recreating the past. Central to this practice is the expertise and knowledge that informs historical research. Located in our universities, in public history networks, and with independent researchers, expert practice underpins the history we enjoy in its many different forms.

Help us show how history is made today and demonstrate why it matters.
