150 years ago the ladies of Chislehurst had this gold inkwell made to celebrate the 18th birthday of the Prince Imperial. On the 20th March at 2 pm we are hosting a lecture and small exhibition on the life of this young man, born to be Napoleon lV but who tragically died in British uniform in the Zulu Wars .
The celebrations for his birthday were huge with thousands entertained in the grounds at Camden Place. The decorations around the town were testament to how the local people took this young exile from France to their hearts. The Prince Imperial Monument opposite the house, paid for by the community only a few years later, was confirmation of that sentiment.
