Mobilising Land and Culture: the Highlands and the British State, 1725-2025 - CALL FOR PAPERS

Mobilising Land and Culture: the Highlands and the British State, 1725-2025

Call for Papers, deadline – 5 May 2025

In 1725 General George Wade’s mission to Scotland began a new chapter in the relationship of the Highlands with the rest of the British Isles, and represented increasing state interest in the uses of this region and its culture.

This tercentenary conference hopes to unpack that legacy, welcoming 20 minute papers on any topic exploring the Highlands, or Highland culture, inside the British union since 1725.

Proposals on the following themes would be particularly welcomed:

  • National Identity
  • Environment and Place
  • Economic and Social Change
  • Emigration and Displacement
  • Memory and Cultural Identity
  • Military Service and Identity

We are also extremely pleased to announce our two plenary speakers:
Professor Sir Hew Strachan & Professor Andrew Mackillop.

To submit your abstract (150-300 words), and a short bio, or to ask any questions you may have, please email: highlandsconference@gmail.com. Our deadline for submissions is May 5th, ahead of the conference on June 14th. We greatly look forward to hearing from you!
