FDR’s Royal Confidante: Crown Princess Märtha of Norway, Franklin D. Roosevelt and World War II - LECTURE

FDR’S ROYAL CONFIDANTE: CROWN PRINCESS MÄRTHA OF NORWAY, FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT AND WORLD WAR II
Trond Norén Isaksen

Except for his family and closest advisors, there was hardly anyone US President Franklin D. Roosevelt saw more of during the Second World War than Crown Princess Märtha of Norway. Roosevelt enjoyed socialising with royals, but the exiled Crown Princess was the only one who became part of his inner circle. His biographers have, however, failed to understand her role and portrayed her variously as some sort of insignificant diversion or as a possible mistress. In fact, Crown Princess Märtha had a secret mission and used her unrestricted access to the US President to play a political, diplomatic and humanitarian role.

Trond Norén Isaksen is an historian and the author of eight books on the history of the Norwegian monarchy from the age of the crusades to the present day. The most recent, a biography of King Harald V, was published in September. His book on Crown Princess Märtha and Franklin D. Roosevelt was published in 2019. He also writes regularly about royal history for British, Norwegian and Dutch publications, appears frequently on television and has given many lectures about a wide range of topics.
