Shaping the legal professions - CONFERENCE

Diversity, dilemmas and discoveries: Shaping the legal professions

Free, online conference hosted by The Open University legal histories research cluster

26-27 November 2026

This international conference explores the intertwined histories of legal education and the legal professions. Law schools, professional bodies, and the people who made them have a central role in legal history. Legal education shaped professions and people who in turn contributed to the development of legal practice, procedure, and the law itself.

At a time when legal education and the legal professions face fresh challenges, this conference explores how law schools and practitioners have responded to changing political, social and economic contexts. It includes contributions from around the world with paper topics ranging from coroners to mediators, law students to judges.
