Call for Papers deadline – 6 July
Building on the cycle initiated in 2025, devoted to understanding how the sea has been and remains a key factor in fostering encounters among peoples, the exchange of knowledge and cultural interaction, we will carry this reflection further in 2026.
In this year’s edition, we will consider how, over the centuries, contacts, encounters, and moments of tension and rupture have taken shape between European, African, American, and Asian spaces. From the earliest times, the seas enabled the formation and consolidation of multiple technological, economic, social, political, and cultural networks and communities.
Taking Vespucci’s metaphor of Mundus Novus as its point of departure, while also expanding upon it, the XIX International Symposium on Maritime History, organised by the Portugue-se Maritime Society through its Maritime History Class, will be devoted to the theme The Sea as a Space of Encounters: Old and New Worlds. The symposium will take place in Lisbon, at the “Almirante Rogério de Oliveira” Auditorium, from 24 to 26 November 2026, and will invite discussion on the following topics:
- The concept of the ocean and the art of navigation/sailing;
- Voyages within Europe and from Europe to the African, American, and Asian continents;
- Cultural and technological interactions;
- Economic, social, and politico-military
Paper proposals should include a title, an abstract of up to 250 words, keywords, and a short biographical note of up to 100 words and should be submitted by 6 July 2026.
The Scientific Committee will notify applicants of its decision by 31 July 2026.
