Friends of The Women's Library Talks Programme - LECTURE

The next meeting in this term’s programme will be on Wednesday 20 May, at 2.30 pm in Room 01, LSE Library.

Two speakers will address the theme of women in the professions, Jane Berney on Professional women in the interwar years: the experience of Ethel Watts, chartered accountant and Fawcett Society chair; and Katie Broomfield on Achieving a worthwhile life: Early women lawyers in England and Wales.

Dr Berney trained as a chartered accountant after studying history at Manchester University, and worked for one of big 4 accountancy firms. Her PhD looked at the workings of the contagious diseases ordinances in 19th century colonial Hong Kong. she This led to her interest in earlier female chartered accountants and the discovery of Ethel Watts’s private papers in the Women’s Library.

Dr Broomfield is a barrister and historian whose doctoral research explores the opening of the legal profession to women in England and Wales. Her many publications on this subject include, as co-author, First: 100 Years of Women in Law (Scala, 2019). More widely in the field of legal history, she has created visual and digital exhibitions, and researched and written podcasts and videos including for the Citizens 800 parliamentary archives video project.
