First Academic Articles: a Mentoring and Workshop Programme for Early Career Historians of Colour

1. About this mentoring and workshop programme

This is a bespoke mentoring and workshop programme hosted by the Royal Historical Society (RHS) for early career historians of colour. The purpose of this programme is to provide guidance to early career historians of colour who are engaged in writing one of the first articles of their academic career.

This programme is one of several run by the Society for early career historians of colour. The call for the Society’s second annual programme, on CV writing, will be announced later in the year.

First Academic Articles will be limited to 10 participants. Applications to take part in the programme will be reviewed by the Royal Historical Society, according to the eligibility criteria (see 2. below), before places are offered to successful applicants. This programme is being led, on behalf of the Society’s Council, by Dr Rebekah Lee.

This programme has two parts.

Part One: Mentoring (one-to-one meetings held between 14 October and 14 November 2024)

  • You will be assigned to a mentor with expertise in history and experience of publishing and reviewing journal articles. Your mentor will meet with you to discuss your draft article which they, and one other mentor, will have read in advance. The mentoring meeting will be a one-to-one (online) session to discuss your article and its development. This session will take place between 14 October and 14 November.

Part Two: Workshop (2pm-4pm, Friday 15 November 2024)

  • Following the mentoring sessions, a group workshop will take place, online, on Friday 15 November 2024. This will consist of keynote presentations by selected speakers on the journal publication process, including guidance on journal selection, preparing your article, and responding to reviews. There will be time dedicated for questions, discussion and the sharing of experiences of article publishing.
