In co-operation with the Modern German History Seminar, Institute of Historical Research (IHR)
Historiography’s relationship to the nation has fundamentally changed within the last twenty years, as ‘transnational’ and ‘global’ history have become, at least in theory, the new normality in historical research. However, this talk argues that the contours of this change are less clear than superficial analysis might suggest, and that this holds particularly true for the field of Zeitgeschichte. The talk will analyse Zeitgeschichte’s intricate, in some ways paradoxical, relationship to the nation and point towards open questions and unresolved challenges for the future development of the discipline.
Sonja Levsen is a historian of modern Europe with a particular interest in comparative and transnational perspectives in the second half of the twentieth century. She is currently Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Tübingen, having worked previously at Trier University and the University of Freiburg.
