War and Peace at Sea: Special Issue | Call for Articles, deadline – 1 May 2025
We seek proposals for articles (up to 8,000 words) on the topic of War and Peace at Sea in the early modern period (ca. 1400-1800). Articles may address any aspect of the subject. Potential topics may include, inter alia, piracy and privateering, advances in naval technology and shipbuilding, shipwreck and marine salvage, naval warfare, slavery, evolution of the international law of the sea, marine ritual, cultural/visual conventions related to maritime depiction, identities at sea, music and popular culture, marine cartography and iconography, mariner rights and remedies, developments in navigation, and peacemaking at sea.
Please submit an abstract (100-150 words) by May 1, 2025 to Hayley Cotter (hcotter@umass) and Anastazja Grudnicka (anastazja.grudnicka@eui.eu). Successful proposals will be notified by May 15, 2025. We anticipate submitting the special issue proposal to the journal Renaissance and Reformation/Renaissance et Réforme by June 1, 2025.
