This workshop is conceived as an interdisciplinary platform to explore the use of AI tools, as well as traditional methods, to better understand racial and class discrimination and mass incarceration in historical prison systems, their legacies, and to inform policy changes to contemporary criminal justice systems across the Atlantic World.
The event will consist of four themes led by the following colleagues:
- A Case Study: Havana’s Royal Prison Logbooks, 1836-1898: Dr Jesús Sanjurjo (University of Strathclyde) and Dr Lloyd Belton (University of Glasgow)
- A Wider Lens: Historical Prison Systems in the Atlantic World: Prof Nicholas Guyatt (University of Cambridge) and Dr John Bardes (Louisiana State University)
- Legacies of Historical Carceral Systems and Prison Reform: Beverley Thompson OBE (Criminal Justice SME) and Prof Elizabeth Weaver (University of Strathclyde)
- Uses of Generative AI for the project and beyond: Dr Yashar Moshfeghi (University of Strathclyde)
