The Mauser C96 pistol is surely one of the most iconic ever made. It has been the subject of study in many books, but despite this legends and inaccuracies related to its genesis still persist.
One of these is that the pistol was designed by the Feederle brothers without Paul Mauser’s knowledge. Legend says this led to problems between the Feederle brothers and Paul Mauser himself. Detailed study of the original documentation in the Paul Mauser Archive teaches us that this legend is ‘Fake-News’ that was introduced to avoid a greater harm: a dispute over the C96 patent against Bergmann. The story with the Feederle brothers went differently, as we will show.
The discovery in the Archive of a book of about 600 pages dated 1898-1900 describing the pistol’s production procedures allows us for the first time to detail some aspects of production never before covered. The lecture, after an introduction about the Paul Mauser Archive, will thus allow us to analyse in detail several aspects related to the genesis of the Mauser C96 pistol.
