Analysis of the 1951 Festival of Britain has often taken the self-estimation of its achievements and challenges by its main progenitors at face-value. It has also tended to focus on specific subjects, such as design and architecture. Although the Festival was a nationwide event, the commentary has almost entirely focused upon London events. A detailed and thoroughgoing analysis which covers all aspects of the Festival, from the controversies over the politics of the occasion to the role played by hitherto unsung aspects such as sport or tourism is long overdue. Drawing on his painstaking and meticulous researches, Dr Iain Wilton FRHIstS tells a fuller and more rounded story of the Festival of Britain than hitherto, debunking plenty of myths in the process.
