The Cambridge Atmospheric Humanities Workshop - CALL FOR PAPERS

The Cambridge Atmospheric Humanities Workshop

21 May 2024 | 9.30 AM – 6 PM | University of Cambridge

Call for Papers, deadline – 19 April 2024, at 5 pm

The Cambridge Atmospheric Humanities Reading Group is pleased to invite papers for its inaugural workshop, generously funded by the BSHS and hosted by HPS, Cambridge. This one day event will explore the perceptions, receptions and representations of ‘atmosphere/s’ in multiple contexts, and we welcome contributions from a variety of disciplines, including but not limited to: History, HPS, Geography, Literary Studies, Ecocriticism, Earth and Atmospheric Science and Philosophy, as well as interdisciplinary approaches.

Papers might engage with any ‘atmospheric’ issue, but may relate in particular to our three areas of focus:

  • Health and the Self – Embodied and sensory reactions to the Atmosphere
  • The Spectral Atmosphere – The ghostly, uncanny and spiritual in the atmosphere
  • Atmospheres Out of Place – Subterranean, underwater, and extraterrestrial atmospheres, and the history of atmospheric analogy

To propose a paper, please email Dr Fiona Amery [faa28@cam.ac.uk] or Thomas Banbury [tjb98@cam.ac.uk] by 5pm 19th April 2024 with a 200-word abstract and short biography.
