The Association of British American Nineteenth Century Historians PGR and ECR Travel Awards
Call for Submissions, deadline – 1 July 2025
The association of British American Nineteenth Century Historians invites applications for PGR & ECR Travel Grants of up to £1000 to help fund travel to the United States to participate in an academic conference, or conduct remote or archival research into nineteenth century American history. Funds may also be used for the reproduction of archival materials, microfilm access, subscriptions to online resources, and copies of published material or unpublished dissertations.
To be eligible for a travel grant, applicants must:
- Hold a current BrANCH membership.
- Be registered for a research degree (MPhil/PhD) in US history at a British university OR be an ECR (usually defined as within 8 years of a successful completion of a PhD in nineteenth-century US history) and in precarious (part-time or temporary) employment
- Be either conducting or disseminating research on the history of the United States between 1787 and 1917
- Plan to utilise grant funding within twelve months of the competition deadline.
- Not be a previous recipient of a Parish Travel Grant at the same career stage.
Applications should convey the importance of the project, a realistic estimate of expenditure, and show an effort to secure funding from other sources. Applicants must make it clear where they have sort other funding from, and the expected amount of any other awards. Applicants must also provide a clear rationale for their research (for example, details of archives and specific collections to be consulted or accessed remotely; details of the proposed conference and an abstract of the paper to be given).
The committee reserves the right to prioritise candidates who are not in receipt of any institutional funding (e.g. via an AHRC consortium or a University scheme). Applicants are asked to make it clear if their PhD funders offer research expenses, and if so how much.
The application form is available on the BrANCH website, branch.org.uk.
Submissions should be emailed to the BrANCH Secretary, Liz Barnes, at e.barnes@reading.ac.uk, no later than July 1.
