"Oxford Jackson" before Oxford: The 1860s Restoration of St Mary, Binsted

A power point talk and tour examining Jackson’s restoration of the church in 1868-69. Jackson is not known for church work, but it formed a regular part of his output. Binsted is a very early work and shows from the start his architecture was rooted in the historical scholarship, Art-Architecture, high craftsmanship and judicious eclecticism for which he became famous in his educational commissions for Oxford University and half of Oxford’s colleges. It shows too his espousal of development in architecture as he rejected the doctrines of the Cambridge Camden Society.
