This lecture and its title taken from Vassilis Colonas’s latest book published in Greek. In this publication, Vassilis Colonas aims to highlight the renewed image of Smyrna in its transition from the 19th to the 20th century, through the work of Greek architects and engineers. Their contribution to the process of urban modernization and their active participation in the public and private architecture of the city, in parallel with the emergence of the cosmopolitan and multicultural society of Smyrna, as the economic and ideological framework of architectural creation, is presented in the light of new evidence, the result of long-term research in public and private archives.
