Nottingham Trent University History Postgraduate Conference
5 June 2025 | NTU City Campus
Call for Papers, deadline – 2 May 2025
The team for Nottingham Trent University’s History Postgraduate Conference is excited to announce the call for papers for this year’s conference, to be held on 5 June 2025 at NTU City Campus
This conference is open to all History postgraduate students, or those who study related disciplines in the school of AAH and Social Sciences at NTU and other universities, as well as unaffiliated members of the public. We especially encourage those early in their postgraduate journey to come and share their research and ideas with the friendly and diverse postgraduate history community.
This year’s theme is ‘Power and the People’. For centuries there has been a relationship between the state and the people they govern. The policies of governments have had a profound effect on the lives, relationships, emotions, and identity of those they governed. In turn, these people have influenced government policy through action, rebellion, resistance, protest, and challenges to authority, the status-quo, and those in power.
In particular, for centuries there have been many groups who have either suffered under, were oppressed by, or resisted a government or society which marginalised them. There remains many unanswered questions or areas which require research, debate, and discussion around these marginalised groups. How did these groups establish their agency? How did they achieve power, positions, or overcame their oppression? How did these groups facilitate or enact reform? How did these groups resist the governments or societies which marginalised them? How did they understand their identity? And how can these questions inform how we understand marginalised communities to this day? We therefore invite abstracts on research themes including (but not limited to):
- The effects of government policy or reforms, especially on marginalised groups.
- The voice of the marginalised, including: Gender, sexuality or gender identity, disability histories, the working class, religious minorities, and ethnic, cultural, or immigrant communities.
- Resistance and/or agency of marginalised groups.
- The Historic injustice of marginalised groups.
- Families, exclusions, and emotions.
- Forgotten or ignored groups or individuals in history.
- Methods for researching, writing about, and uncovering marginalised, forgotten, silenced, or minority communities or individuals.
We envision that presentations will be 15-minutes in length. However, we also welcome abstracts from PGR students in their first year of research for a 5-minute paper panel, which will allow new starters to briefly introduce their research to the NTU History community.
Please fill out the form below. It will ask for:
- A short biography in the third person (100 words)
- An abstract (of no more than 300 words)
- Details regarding your type of submission (15-minute or 5-minute presentation)
- It will also ask if you require any adjustments or additional support in order to attend, which we will be very happy to accommodate.
If you encounter any issues, please contact mollie.smith2018@my.ntu.ac.uk with any queries.
