In this talk, Bashir Bashir offers an initial conceptual framework that identifies and explores the enabling conditions for a joint Arab-Jewish deliberation on the memories of the Holocaust and the Nakba. The proposed framework paves the way, he will argue, for binational ethics and politics that are required for decolonization and historical reconciliation in Israel/Palestine.
Bashir Bashir is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology, Political Science and Communication at the Open University of Israel and a Research Fellow at the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute. His primary research interests are nationalism and citizenship studies, democratic theory, and the politics of reconciliation. His publications include: ‘Deliberating the Holocaust and the Nakba: Disruptive Empathy and Binationalism in Israel/Palestine’, with Amos Goldberg, Journal of Genocide Research, 16(1), 2014; ‘The Strengths and Weaknesses of Integrative Solutions for the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict’, The Middle East Journal, 70(4), 2016; ‘Reconciling Historical Injustices: Deliberative Democracy and the Politics of Reconciliation’, Res Publica, 18(2), 2012; and The Politics of Reconciliation in Multicultural Societies, co-edited with Will Kymlicka (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2008).
