Maritime Britain, c.1550-c.1750 - CALL FOR PAPERS

Conference | 16-17 September 2025 | University of Southampton

Maritime Britain, c.1550-c.1750

Call for Papers, deadline – 1 September 2025

This call for papers is linked with the launch of the AHRC-funded Maritime Britain Project’s website and searchable database (www.maritimebritain.org).

This two-day conference will showcase the latest research in maritime history and feature three keynote lectures by Dr Richard Blakemore (Reading), Dr Elaine Murphy (Plymouth), and Professor Claire Jowitt (University of East Anglia). The project’s website and database will be launched on 17th September.

We are keen to receive proposals for papers that cover the three key themes of Seaborne Trade, Shipping, and Maritime Communities over the period 1550-1750. Whilst the focus is on Britain and the three themes, the remit is broad, and we would be happy to receive proposals on topics such as piracy, navies, privateering, and women and the sea.
