Manuscript and Print: Exploring Early Modern Trade, Networks and Culture

Call for Papers, deadline – 30 April 2024

We are pleased to announce this year’s Cabinet of Curiosities Conference, which will take place from 26 July 2024 with the possibility of a second date (tbd). We invite proposals for the conference papers from PGR’s, ECR’s, and established academics on the theme of ‘Manuscript and Print’, aiming to discuss and debate the impact of print and manuscript trade on early modern culture, particularly through the formation of networks and communities. Papers are welcome to discuss any geographical area and we actively encourage interdisciplinary approaches.

Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

  • The trade networks of printers, book sellers and publishers
  • Relationships between print, manuscript and popular culture
  • Global and transnational connections
  • Religious and political disputes
  • The role of gender in print and witchcraft
  • Apprenticeships, youth and mastering print
  • Print, manuscript, propaganda and the public sphere
  • Print and manuscript as a commercial endeavour

Please email abstract proposals of up to 300 words and a one-page CV to yorkcabinetofcuriosities@gmail.com, by 30 April 2024.
