London Overcomes - Resilience and Recovery in the History of the Capital - deadline 24 May 2021

London and Middlesex Archaeological Society

Local History Conference 2021 (Online) – Saturday 6th and 13th November 2021

Call for papers:  London Overcomes: Resilience and Recovery in the History of the Capital

The Coronavirus pandemic has arguably proven to be one of the most significant challenges for London and Londoners in living memory. However, history tells us that London overcomes and, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, it recovers, rebuilds, renews, regenerates, and reasserts itself time and time again in response to such challenges. The theme of this conference is resilience and recovery in the history of the capital and the focus is on how London and Londoners have overcome challenges rather than the challenges themselves.

The organisers of the conference are seeking proposals from local historians, academics, postgraduate students, and anyone with a scholarly interest in the history of London for engaging and accessible talks or presentations of around 20-25 minutes. The LAMAS Local History Conference attracts a keen ‘general interest’ audience as well as many members of local history societies from across London and its surrounding counties who have more specialised interests.

The 2021 conference will be an online conference, with talks presented live via an online platform. Papers on any aspect of resilience and recovery from any period in London’s history are welcomed. Themes might include:

Diseases and pandemics
Fires and other destructive events
Wars, conflicts and terrorism
Accidents and disasters
People and communities
Dislocation and development
Buildings and the built environment
Microhistories

Proposals comprising an abstract of no more than 500 words should be sent, preferably via e-mail, to John Price j.price@gold.ac.uk or via the Department of History, Goldsmiths University of London, New Cross, London, SE14 6NW.

The closing date for proposals is Monday 24 May 2021. Speakers will be selected and contacted by the end of May 2021.
