From late August to early October 2025, an exhibition of the East Midlands paintings of John Louis Petit will be held at Rutland County Museum, and an associated symposium on the Gothic controversy in the area will be held there on September 27th – see https://profchrisbaker.com/john-louis-petit-an-introduction/

But who was John Louis Petit? He was a clergyman, architectural critic and painter who was the chief critic of the Gothic movement championed by Gilbert Scott. He was well known in his day, but who has been largely forgotten until recent years, when the importance of his work has come to be recognized. The critic Andrew Graham-Dixon writes of him  “…the greatest discovery in British Art for a generation….”.

To give an introduction to the life and times of John Louis Petit, Professor Chris Baker will give a short (around 30 minutes) talk at All Saints church at Oakham on Thursday April 3rd at 12.30pm, and will give a similar talk via Zoom at 7.30pm that day. All are welcome – to obtain the Zoom link, please contact Chris on bakercj54@gmail.com.
