International Society for the First World War Studies ECR Conference - CALL FOR PAPERS

International Society for the First World War Studies ECR Conference, 17 May 2024

Location: Institute of Historical Research, London, UK

Format: Hybrid

Call for Papers, deadline: 29 March 2024

In 2014-2018 the UK and the world marked the centenary of the First World War. Those years saw a great increase in public interest in the topic and funding opportunities for scholars of the conflict, especially PhD students and early career scholars. As a result, a new generation of remarkable First World War historians has emerged, who are now entering their mid-career stage. However, those who began studying the First World War in the years after the centenary had to navigate very different circumstances with decreasing attention to the topic and a global pandemic that prevented them from meeting and networking in person. This conference seeks to remedy that and bring together scholars at different stages of the career to discuss the state of the field of the First World War Studies.

International Society of First World War Studies invites proposals from current PhD students and Early Career Researchers (PhD + 5 years, not including career breaks, maternity leaves, etc.) who are working on topics related to the First World War in the broadest sense, the origins and the aftermath of the conflict. Scholars from a wide range of disciplines are encouraged to apply. The conference welcomes proposals on social, cultural, literary aspects of the war alongside more traditional military history subjects, such as strategy, leadership, technology, etc.

The goal of the conference is to provide a platform for the new generation of the First World War scholars to showcase their research, build their academic networks and get advice from more established colleagues. In place of a keynote, the event will feature a round table of mid-career and more senior scholars – Aimée Fox, Heather Jones, Jenny McLeod and Chris Kempshall –  talking about their professional experiences and sharing advice with the new generation of scholars and discussing the effect of the passed centenary and the future of the field.

Please, send your proposals (c. 300 words) for papers of 20 minutes in length along with short biographical notes to the conference organiser Dr. Sofya Anisimova at sofya.anisimova@ucd.ie by 29 March 2023. We welcome proposals for both in-person and remote presentations.

If you have any questions about the conference, or if you are a more senior colleague and would like to attend the conference to meet a new generation of scholars, please, reach out to Dr Anisimova via email.
