The Gloriana Society’s inaugural conference will be the first, non-Historic Royal Palaces sponsored, conference ever to be held at the Tower of London! For this week ONLY, we have opened conference registration again for last minute attendees. Also there are two smaller opportunities in which to join the Gloriana Society’s exclusive conference proceedings. There are two events are cheaper options that allow you to take part in this unique experience.

The Gloriana Society inaugural conference, In the Light of Gloriana, will be held at the majestic and historic Tower of London from the 18-20 November 2016.

During the course of the three day conference, over 70 presentations will examine the influence of the myths of ‘Gloriana’ and the ‘golden age’ of Elizabethan England from a variety of disciplines including history, history of art, literature, music and so much more . The image of Elizabeth I as the great and virtuous Gloriana had a profound effect during her lifetime within literature, drama, social hierarchy, festivals and pageants, church leadership, and national identity. Other themes that are explored are:

  • Authority and power
  • International politics and dynamics
  • Material culture
  • Court culture and diplomacy
  • Knowledge and the sciences
  • Society, crime and punishment

The two smaller opportunities to join the proceedings are open to the public and everyone is welcome! The first opportunity is the public lecture on Saturday, 19 November at 4:30 p.m. The lecture will be given by History a tYork faculty member, Dr. John Cooper on “The Impact of Elizabeth I.” Tickets for this event are on sale until 1 November and includes not only access to the public lecture but also the Tower of London exhibits and buildings.

The second opportunity is the Gloriana Society’s inaugural Elizabethan banquet dinner. Taking place in the White Tower and escorted by a Yeoman of the Guard, dinner guests will walk a red carpet through the exhibits that highlight Britain’s glorious past for a beautiful welcome champagne reception. The reception will feature the first of a two part musical repertoire of authentic Elizabethan music by Nouvelle/Ancienne. Guests will then be seated for an intimate, delicious, three-course dinner (main, dessert and petit fours with coffee/tea) and wine. The evening will conclude with a final musical performance of extraordinary Elizabethan music. Space is limited and is first come, first served.
