PhD Opportunity: History of Public Health

The Centre for History in Public Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is pleased to invite applications for a fully funded three-year full-time PhD studentship on the history of public health, starting in September 2024, funded by a donation from the Wilkinson Charitable Trust.

The exact focus will be chosen by the candidate: possible topics include historical research on:

  • Health laws and ethics
  • Mental illness
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Healthcare in prisons
  • Colonialism and schools of tropical medicine
  • Colonialism and the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine
  • Health systems and policy, including the British NHS
  • Health education/promotion
  • Health consumerism
  • Drugs, alcohol and tobacco
  • Public health in post-war Britain
