History Now: Institute of Historical Research Summer School, 2020

The IHR’s 2020 Summer School — ‘History Now’ — will run at the Institute of Historical Research, University of London, between Monday 13 and Friday 17 July 2020. https://www.history.ac.uk/historynow

The Institute is the UK’s national centre for historical research — used by students, researchers and historians of all kinds, from across the United Kingdom and worldwide. This year’s School focuses on the big questions that interest historians today, and looks ahead to how we might research the past in the 2020s. How does history shed light on the urgent questions we face today? How do we use and misuse the past in the present? How will history change in the coming decade? The Summer School combines lectures, workshops, hands-on training & writing sessions. We’re bringing together people who know the past matters, now more than ever.

Teaching on ‘History Now’ will be led by the Institute’s academic and research staff, and by guest lecturers from academia, heritage, publishing and the media. External lecturers include: Professor Catherine Hall (University College London), Professor Ludmilla Jordanova (Durham), Professor Alex Walsham (Cambridge), Professor Alison Oram (Leeds Beckett), Dr Lucy Delap (Cambridge), Polly Russell (British Library), Sundeep Lidher (Cambridge), Rachel Crossley (East End Women’s Museum) and the digital historian Dr Adam Crymble.

Over five days we’ll explore some of the key areas of current historical research, and the changing ways in which we can engage with the past. Themes include: History and the environment, Public history, History and the museums and heritage sectors, History and activism, Digital history and the use of digital resources, Race and decolonisation, History and locality, New histories of time, and The future of history

The School will also undertake visits to local research libraries and exhibition spaces to see history in practice. The fee for the Summer School is £650. We have a selection of bursaries covering half and full fees for the IHR Summer School. Applications are now welcome with a deadline of Monday 20 April
