History as/and Social Science - CALL FOR PAPERS

1.5 Day Conference | 20-21 May 2025 | University of Glasgow

History and/as Social Science: Current Approaches and Future Directions

Call for Papers, deadline – 14 March 2025

In the context of increasing anxieties around the financial stability of Higher Education in the United Kingdom, the humanities have fallen victim to budget cuts, department closures, and institutional restructuring. Within this, history departments have been particularly targeted, with questions arising across the political sphere around the ‘value and appeal of a history degree’ (RHS, 2022).

History has always been an inherently interdisciplinary vocation; bending and blending the boundaries between the humanities and the social sciences. Similarly, within UKHE institutions, the humanities and social sciences are often inextricably intertwined and analogous. Yet, important differences between the two schools remain.

This workshop seeks to understand the ways in which history is being taught in the social sciences across UKHE, and the impact this has had on historians and the history discipline.

We are seeking submission proposals of c. 250 words for a 15-20 minute paper from interested scholars related to, but not exclusively on, the following themes:

  • Teaching history as a social science
  • Teaching history in the social sciences
  • Teaching the social sciences as a historian
  • The impact of history in the social sciences on professional boundaries and identity

We particularly welcome proposals from precariously employed scholars, Graduate Teaching Assistants, and independent researchers with experience in teaching history.

The deadline for proposals is EOB Friday 14th March 2025. They should be sent to Kristin.hay@glasgow.ac.uk and felicity.cawley@glasgow.ac.uk with a short biography.
