Henry VIII On Tour: Palaces, Progresses and Panache

This online conference interrogates royal progresses, diplomatic meetings and ceremonial entries in early modern Europe. Themes include the logistics of royal progresses, places and hosts visited, ritual symbolism, and their rolee in political culture. Originally scheduled for the 500th anniversary of the Field of Cloth Gold, the conference coincides with Historic Royal Palaces’ exhibition “Gold and Glory: Henry VIII and the French King” at Hampton Court Palace (May to September 2021). It will mark the final event of the AHRC-funded network “Henry VIII on Tour: Tudor Palaces and Royal Progresses”, a collaboration between Historic Royal Palaces and the University of York.

Keynote speakers will be Simon Thurley, Glenn Richardson and Tracy Borman (Introduction).
