From the Breast: Interpretations and Representations of Breastfeeding and Infant-feeding in Pre-modern Cultures Workshop

A culmination of the ‘From the Breast’ seminar series (October 2022 – March 2023), this hybrid workshop aims to explore how modern understandings and relationships with breastfeeding can influence our understanding of breastfeeding in past cultures, through a co-creative and interdisciplinary discussion between experts from the fields of Humanities, Medicine, and the Arts.

  • How can our modern understanding and experiences with breastfeeding better inform our interpretation of past breastfeeding representations and practices?
  • How has our modern relationship with breastfeeding potentially biased our understanding and interaction with past breastfeeding practices?
