Exhibition launch event: ‘Refugees from National Socialism in Wales: Learning from the Past for the Future’

Date / time: 10 November, 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

The Centre for the Movement of People (CMOP) at Aberystwyth University is pleased to announce the launch event for the exhibition ‘Refugees from National Socialism in Wales: Learning from the Past for the Future’. This exhibition, created in partnership with the Imperial War Museums’ (IWM) Second World War and Holocaust Partnership Programme and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, explores the stories of refugees from Central Europe who sought sanctuary in Wales before the Second World War.

Between 1933 and 1939, approximately 90,000 refugees escaped from Nazi Europe to Britain, with several thousand finding themselves in Wales. This exhibition tells the lesser-known stories of these refugees. Through objects, artworks and photographs, it showcases the experiences of refugees and how they were welcomed by Welsh society. It also examines their positive contribution to their adopted country. It has been co-curated by modern-day refugees and volunteers living in Wales. Refreshments will be provided.

The exhibition itself will run until 29 January 2023 in Gallery 2 of the Aberystwyth Arts Centre. For more information about the project, see https://wp-research.aber.ac.uk/nsrefugeeswales/
