Ecclesiastical History Colloquium 2022: Art, Religion & Commerce c.1750-c.1950

This conference will be held by the Oxford Centre for Methodism and Church History and will take place both online and in-person at Oxford Brookes University on Thursday 30 June 2022.

Programme

2.00 pm – Dr Matthew Craske – Another Enlightenment: Painting, sculpture and the promotion of Christian experience in Georgian England.

2.40 pm – The Bicentenary of James Smetham, Pre-Raphaelite [the University owns the Smetham Collection of art works].

3.15 pm – Tea

3.45 pm – Peter Vass – Getting Out of Whitechapel: Jewish identity and modernism in the lives and art of Mark Gertler and David Bomberg in the early 20thC.

4.30 pm – Dr Sandy Brewer – The Sunday School paintings of Elsie Anna Wood and other women artists 1930-1950. A movement from a ‘two-eyed stance’ to the ‘beholder’s share’.

5.15 pm – Dr Jan Cox – Stanley Spencer: Nativity, Crucifixion, Resurrection

6.00 pm – Art Exhibition, featuring the works of Agatha Hellier and Evelyn Dunbar

6.30 pm – Buffet dinner
