What is a witch in History?
This conference proposes to open the discussion on what we, as scholars, mean when we refer to witchcraft. Despite the global research into the history of witches and witchcraft, it is clear that our definitions vary considerably between regions, and even between decades. The result is that, at times, we speak across each-other in our research, drawing conclusions based on conflicting definitions and parameters of what we study.
Join us (online or in-person) for this three-day conference at the University of York. The event will approach this thorny question from a range of angles, including legal, historical, literary, psychological and colonial to name a few.
There will also be an opportunity to take part in a creative writing workshop, and hear stories of historical witchcraft and magic (in-person attendees only).
