Ryan Burns is an Assistant Professor of History at Jacksonville State University. He received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 2019 and held a postdoctoral fellowship at the Chabraja Center for Historical Studies. His research focuses on the history of shame and its intersection with the history of religion. Kirk Discipline and Roman Catholicism in Early Modern Scotland is his first book.

Michelle D. Brock is Professor of History at Washington and Lee University. A scholar of religion, gender, and the supernatural in early modern Scotland, she is the author of Satan and the Scots: The Devil in Post-Reformation Scotland (Routledge, 2016) and Plagues of the heart: Crisis and covenanting in a seventeenth-century Scottish town (Manchester University Press, 2024). She is also co-editor of Knowing Demons, Knowing Spirits in the Early Modern Period (Palgrave, 2018) and the Routledge History of the Devil in the Western Tradition (Routledge, 2025).
