Art, Museums and Our Understanding of Asia in Britain Today - LECTURE

 

 

The inaugural events at the Moore Auditorium on 31 August 2023 include a Keynote delivered by Edward Vickers, Professor of Comparative Education and current holder of the UNESCO Chair on Education for Peace, Social Justice and Global Citizenship at Kyushu University. He will speak on ‘Public history, colonial victimhood and the fascist impulse – Chauvinism and paranoia in the representation of the Asian past’. This will be followed by a panel discussion on ‘Art, museums and our understanding of Asia in Britain today’ presented in collaboration with the London Centre for Public History (RHUL). Panellists include Prof Vickers, Prof Sarah Ansari (RHUL) and Dr Alison Ohta (Director of the Royal Asiatic Society).

Professor Chang Lung-Chih, the director of the National Museum of Taiwan History, will be also join us. We will showcase a MA students led online exhibition entitled ‘Rethinking Asia: Tea and Tigers’, a pioneering online exhibition hosted by The Heritage Lab.The evening will close with a wine reception.
