A study day, in collaboration with the University of Southampton and informed by their project, ‘English Merchant Shipping, Trade, and Maritime Communities: From the Spanish Armada to the Seven Years War’.
Researchers and historians will explore the historical background to the events of 1588. Topics include Hampshire Under the threat of War; Southampton & Spain & Creative Response, Pageants, Film & Noval. The day will end with a screening of the film The Armada Chronicle, set in Southampton in 1588. There will also be a small exhibition created by the University of Southampton and attendees will receive a copy of the novel “The Theatre of the World”, set in the turbulent times of Elizabethan Southampton. A book stall will have volumes from the Southampton Records Series for sale at a specially discounted price.
