Annual Conference of the Society for Reformation Studies: Networks and Networking in the Reformation - CONFERENCE & CALL FOR PAPERS

Annual conference of the Society for Reformation Studies:
Networks and Networking in the Reformation

9-11 April 2024 | Westminster College, Cambridge | Online

Call for Papers, deadline – 31 January 2024

Networks were an intrinsic part of early modern society. People were connected via networks of friendship and kinship, confessional identity, education, class, cultural and social practice, and academia. During periods of exile, individuals could remain in contact with friends and family through physical networks which included post, messengers, trade, and smuggling. The vast range of correspondence produced in the Reformation period testifies to the importance of these networks and groups but much remains to be uncovered about how these networks developed, evolved, and impacted the direction of the Reformation in cities, towns and villages across Europe and beyond. This conference considers the myriad ways these networks operated in the early modern period. How can we trace networks across geographic and religious boundaries? How did existing or new confessional networks influence the development of religious groups and their interactions with one another? What impact did suppression and persecution have on these networks?

Leading us in our consideration of Reformation and Networks will be:

Howard Hotson, University of Oxford (tbc)
Kirsten Macfarlane, University of Oxford
Christoph Strohm, University of Heidelberg

As always, papers which reflect the current work of participants, regardless of their relevance to the theme, are welcome. The conference is always particularly keen to hear communications from postgraduate and early career scholars. Participants are encouraged to consider submitting their papers to Reformation and Renaissance Review.

Proposed paper titles together with an abstract (100-150 words) should be submitted by 31 January 2024 to Professor Charlotte Methuen (charlotte.methuen@glasgow.ac.uk).

Registrations must be received by 16 February 2024, either by the booking form (available from Charlotte Methuen or via Eventbrite (https://srs2024.eventbrite.co.uk).

This will be a hybrid conference with in-person and on-line attendance.
