This online workshop is part of a two-year international project, funded by the AHRC, exploring the global history of treason through the centuries. Despite the topicality of ‘treason’ in our present-day world – as the ultimate crime or in violent political rhetoric – the subject is still under-researched conceptually. In this workshop we are focusing on the ‘legal framework’ of treason: legal definitions, historical traditions, judicial investigations and trials, the regime manipulation of treason, the perspective of ‘traitors’.
The 20 papers range from ancient to modern. We welcome comparative discussion and participation from a range of disciplines: historians, linguists, political scientists, lawyers, political philosophers etc.
