Each year, the Royal Historical Society awards more than £50,000 in grants to early career historians, covering a wide range of activities. Full details of all grants offered, and their deadlines are available here.

The next deadline for applications for grants is 1 September 2022. This round includes applications for:

Submissions for both grant programmes is via the Society’s online applications portal.

Please note: to be eligible for either of these awards, applicants must be Postgraduate Members or Associate Fellows of the Royal Historical Society. The next closing dates to apply to join the Society are 22 August and 31 October 2022.

About these grants

Early Career Fellowship Grants: provide an award of up to £2000, maximum, for discrete research projects lasting no more than six months. The focus is on supporting career-building research or activities, and the aim is to provide support to enable researchers to produce a discrete outcome (such as an article or book proposal) with the grant.

Because of limited funds, applicants must be early career historians within three years of submitting their PhD in a historical subject. (The three years does not include periods of parental leave, or leave due to illness or other caring responsibilities.)

Martin Lynn Scholarship for African History: the Society makes an annual Martin Lynn Scholarship award to assist a postgraduate researcher of African history. The Scholarship is worth £1500 and is awarded once each year.

Thanks to the generosity of the family of the late Martin Lynn, the Society has established an annual award in his memory. Martin Lynn was Professor of African History in the Queen’s University, Belfast, the first scholar to hold a chair in African history in Ireland.

Other RHS grants offered to early career historians

The Society also provides support to cover research expenses, conference travel and conference organisation. Further details of each of these programmes are available here.

The next closing date for these particular grant awards is 1 November 2022 via the Society’s applications portal. Applications are welcome from researchers who are Postgraduate Members or Associate Fellows of the Royal Historical Society.
