An international conference that will be taking place at the University of Winchester this July.

Winchester, An Early Medieval Royal City is a conference on the development of Winchester, its cultural and political life and its place in the Saxon and early medieval world. The conference will take place at the University of Winchester from 9th-12th July 2017.

The keynote speakers for the conference have been confirmed as:

  • Professor Eric Fernie, “The Norman Cathedral of Winchester and its Local, National and International Contexts”
  • Professor Barbara Yorke, “Royal Burial in Winchester: Context and Significance”
  • Professor Martin Biddle, “Capital Considerations: Winchester and the Birth of Urban Archaeology”
  • Professor Sharon Rowley, “Constructing Early Medieval Winchester: Historical Narratives and the Compilation of British Library Cotton Otho B.xi”

In addition to the keynote lectures, there will also be daily parallel sessions.

The topics under discussion include the intellectual life of the city, court and politics, saints and miracle stories, bishops of the city and the people of Winchester.

On Sunday 9th July, a public lecture, “The Norman Cathedral of Winchester and its Local, National and International Contexts” by Professor Eric Fernie at The Guildhall, Winchester will also form part of the conference.The conference is part of Winchester, The Royal City project, which aims to celebrate and promote the ancient city as a centre of key significance to the development of England the English Culture.
