Elizabethan Willoughbys of Wollaton Hall

Date / time: 5 September, 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Elizabethan Willoughbys of Wollaton Hall

The Elizabethan Willoughbys of Wollaton Hall through the eyes of Cassandra Willoughby, Duchess of Chandos (1670–1735)

When Cassandra Willoughby compiled volume one of her “Account of the Willoughby Family”, she copied personal letters and household accounts, sometimes adding her own views. Her focus was especially trained on the women in the family.

This talk, by Professor Jo Ann Moran Cruz of Georgetown University, will look at Cassandra’s role as transcriber and what she has to tell us about Elizabeth Willoughby (d. 1595), her six daughters and her estranged sister-in-law Margaret Arundel. Professor Moran Cruz has edited this ‘Account’ which has recently been published in the Royal Historical Society’s Camden Series by Cambridge University Press.
