Archive Evening - News! Newspapers! and The Stationers' Company

The Library and Archives Committee is pleased to present: ARCHIVE EVENING 2019 — NEWS! NEWSPAPERS! AND THE STATIONERS’ COMPANY

As the London Livery Company representing printing, publishing and the allied professions, the Stationers’ Company has counted newspaper makers among its members ever since the publication of the first English quarto newsbooks, or ‘currantes’, in the 1620s. The 1937 amalgamation of the Stationers’ Company with the recently founded Newspaper Makers’ Company consolidated the link. This year, our annual Archive Evening will explore the role played by Stationers in the making of newspapers, and how these newspapers shaped our concept of news.

Speakers will include Christopher McKane, Past Master of the Stationers’ Company and former Deputy Managing Editor of the Times, who will talk about “The Making of The Thunderer”: the early years of the Times, from its first appearance, as the Daily Universal Register, in 1785. The Stationers’ Company Archivist, Dr. Ruth Frendo, will discuss what the Company Archive can tell us about how news has been selected, regulated and published over time.

All will be served with the customary Company hospitality, which includes a light buffet, wines and soft drinks.
