If nations are ‘imagined communities’, how has the idea of ‘parish’ contributed to our shared sense of identity and belonging? In a time when environmentalists and politicians alike are looking for sustainable models of community, Andrew Rumsey considers whether this ancient inheritance might yet point us to common ground.
Dr Andrew Rumsey is Bishop of Ramsbury, and the author of several books, including Parish: an Anglican theology of place and his recent work English Grounds: a pastoral journal, described as ‘A total delight’ by Simon Jenkins. His writing specialises in themes of landscape, place and heritage, all of which feed into his role as national lead for church buildings and cathedrals in the Church of England.
