Conscription and its Malcontents in the First World War

This one-day workshop showcases new research on the public reaction to conscription during the First World War.

Taking a global approach, it features research on Ireland, New Zealand, Canada, the United States, the British West Indies, Northern Rhodesia, Habsburg Czechoslovakia, Romanov Kazakhstan, and Morocco.

It also explores gender and conscription, including masculinity, childhood and the suffrage movement.

The event will consist of four panels of new research papers followed by a roundtable discussion with leading historians.
